Local municipalities can place their own governing policies over motorized scooters that override state laws. This means, while California have laws on electric scooters, any local laws take precedence.

Some of the most common laws in the area are:

  • Operator must wear a helmet.
  • Operator may not ride on the sidewalk.
  • Operator must have to have a valid driver’s license.
  • Operator must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Operator may not transport additional passengers in addition to the operator.
  • Operator may not carry a package that prevents them from keeping at least 1 hand upon the handlebars.
  • Operators may not ride motorized / electric scooters on a road where the speed limit is over 25 MPH.

CVC 21235 – a motorized scooter cannot be operated:

  • Without a brake.
  • On a road or highway where the posted speed limit is higher than 25 mph.
  • Without a fastened bicycle helmet.
  • Fastened to a bike or other vehicle.
